My response to my group members
Hilary Cummings:
Concept of Self:
You offered many interesting ideas pertaining to the issue being discussed. The issue was if we can truly know each other without meeting in person. You stated that individuals can express themselves through a blog website just as good if not better as opposed to a traditional classroom environment. I understood both your scenarios and how it pertained to the issue being discussed. You offered many valid points as to why an online class is better as opposed to a traditional classroom setting. I do agree with you that an online class is at time more suitable for students as opposed to meeting in person. I think you did an overall good job speaking your mind. I in the other hand still think that we can’t truly know someone without meeting them in person.
Without God:
I liked how you started your blog. You began by stating facts from an article claiming that individuals that were religious still are more likely to commit crimes then individuals that were not religious. I think that article is wrong. I agree with you when you said “without God there would be a lot of lost people in the world”. You go on and list reasons why individuals need God. I do not think that we can be good without God. I enjoyed reading your blogs, and I spelled your name right by the way.
Jessica Chee:
The individual self essay:
You offer a lot of great information pertaining to the issue of the individual self. It is completely true most of the time that individuals will only show what they want other people to know about them whether it be online or in person. I understand a lot of what you are saying in your blog. Individuals intentionally display certain type of information about them self and omit other information they do now wan to convey. So basically we can’t really know someone if we have not met them in person right? “We create an allusion for them of how we want them to perceive us”. This statement is true coming from my own personal experience.
Can we be good without God?
My pastor said the same thing that America was founded on Christian values and now America at times is attempting to separate from Christian values. You mentioned some of the Ten Commandments from God stating that people are now not following his commandments. Regardless of what religion an individual is from they should know right from wrong. I think that you did a great job supporting your argument. I like how you speak your mind. You are such a great writer. I know for a fact that we can’t be good without God. One error that I notice when you are doing in text citation remember to put the authors name. You only had the page number. I really enjoy reading your blog. You always have interesting ideas and opinions.
Jordan Fleugel:
There was only one blog.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I on the other hand disagree with you. I do not think that we can be good without God because God give individuals purpose in life. I guess it is because I am a religious person. People make decisions everyday whether they are wrong or right. Without God I think the world would be a lot worse. I think individuals should take just the positive traits from their parents. I think it is cool that you are liberal.

Identity: A function of the brain or something more?
Question: In your humble opinion, what is an idea? What is a thought? Where do these things come from and why? Run with these elusive concepts, and see where the writing takes you.
An idea in my own humble opinion is the main thing that I am thinking about. The word idea can be subjective because it can refer to an individual’s conscious mind or how someone speaks their mind when they have an idea. An idea is generally a collection of information stored in your conscious mind. Ideas can be kept secret or made public depending on the importance of the idea or circumstances. An idea can be good or bad depending on how a person follows through on it. An idea is what I usually get when I am attempting to solve a problem or deal with a difficult situation.
A thought can be considered an idea. I am assuming these two words are similar because they both revolve around an individual’s conscious mind and they can be kept secret or made public. A thought is how someone is processing their thinking. I get different thoughts throughout the day some good and some bad. A thought is what someone is thinking about. A thought is basically how someone processes their way of thinking.
Ideas and thoughts come from your conscious mind. I think that an idea and thought are two different actions because individuals react differently when composing and idea or though. An idea is what a person is thinking about and a thought is how someone is processing their thinking. According to Hazen “thoughts and emotions can be explained by neurons alone” (Hazen pg 94). Basically in order to explain how humans receive thoughts and ideas Hazen suggests that we need to study the human brain to understand where thoughts and ideas come from.

Can we be good without God? Before I answer this question I am going to provide a brief synopsis of the article written by Glen Tinder. The author Glenn Tinder discusses the issue of spiritual Christianity connecting to a political meaning. Tinder’s primary focus in his essay is to establish a connection between politics ideas and Christianity. He poses several different ideas and theories pertaining to the primary issue being discussed in his article. Glenn Tinder poses a question in his article, “Can we be good without God?” (Tinder 69). Tinder examines different aspects of Christianity. He primarily examines Christian love and morals along with the ideas of the so called exalted/fallen individual. For example the author writes “love seems distant as spiritually from politics, yet any discussion of the political meaning of Christianity must begin by considering love” (Tinder 70). Tinder claims that when Christians are involved in certain situations it should involve love. According to Tinder love is a priority for many Christians as well as morals. He goes on to discuss the relationship of love, morals and politics ideas with Christians.
We cannot be good without God. Two primary reasons for that are the world’s precepts would vanish and there would be no form of guidance concerning how a person should live their lives. There would be as much compassion or sympathy in the world. Life is meaningless without God according to the Christian bible. With this being said how can we be good without God? Tinder also points out that not all Christians are good people. For example he writes “Christians have supported almost every other common social evil” (Tinder 84). I’m not entirely sure what his motives are here claiming that not all Christians are good people. It would be difficult to live a life without God because there would not be a sense of guidance pertaining to how someone should live their life.
I feel that God gives individuals a sense of purpose and guidance along with morals. Without purpose, guidance and morals how would there be structure in the world. I really did not like Tinder’s attempt to establish a connection between the so called “spiritual and political” (Tinder 69). The reason for this dislike for his attempt is because I did not entirely understand everything that was trying to convey in his article. His article did provide some interesting information pertaining to political meaning in Christianity like love and the exalted/fallen individual. I would have to conclude that life is not good without God.

Social Psychology-The individual self

First impressions can be considered important depending on the circumstances. I like to make a first time good impression on the first day of class to the instructor and to my fellow classmates. I was wondering what my classmates perceive of me based solely on my blog. Anyhow I would have to say there is a major difference in terms of making a first time good impression in a traditional modern day classroom as opposed to making a first time impression through a blog website. After reading the article written by Erving Goffman titled “The Presentation of Self” I learned a lot of new interesting information pertaining to how an individual would present themselves to others in person or through a social network. The author Goffman presents many interesting facts pertaining to how a person presents themselves. For example “When an individual enters the presence of others, they commonly seek to acquire information” (Goffman 42). What is meant by the author’s statement is people seek information based on appearance. Individuals may seek information like social and financial status based solely on appearance.
I feel non-verbal communication is also important. Goffman refers to non- verbal communication as “the expressiveness of the individual” (Goffman 43). Two key factors of expression are through “verbal symbols” and through “action” according to Erving Goffman. I do not think an individual can express these two key factors through a blog. Take for example action. In a traditional classroom setting an individual does certain things for certain reasons and this can show their personality traits. Being able to see how other people behave and act in person is completely different as opposed to reading about it on a social network.
After reading Goffman’s article I do not think we can truly know an individual if we have not met that individual in person. If we only know an individual through some form of social networking like a blog we only have access to limited amount of information about the individual. We will never get to see characteristics of emotion and behavior. An individual can easily deceive others on a social network like a blog as opposed to in person. There is also this stereotype of danger speaking with individuals through a social network as opposed to in person. However online courses are completely safe, I have taken several of them throughout my entire college career. Having a blog is a great way to keep in contact with fellow classmates pertaining to school work.
In conclusion, I would have to say it is difficult to really know someone if you have not met them in person. I feel that there are some missing elements meeting someone online as opposed to in person. An individual has the power to control their first time impression in person depending on the circumstances. Making a first time impression on a blog conveys just a small portion of the individual’s true identity. Technology has obviously changed how people socialize.
